Join Surf Coast children’s book creators Kaye BaillieStef Gemmill and Renée Treml in conversation with Nicole Maher, owner and curator of Great Escape Books, as they discuss their experiences writing, illustrating and getting published.

This panel discussion is part of the 2020 #NotTheSurfCoastArtsTrail PORTAL, an online festival and gathering space featuring Surf Coast creatives of all disciplines.

The Panelists

Kaye Baillie is an award-winning author of picture books for children and finds inspiration from true stories and events. Her newest book, The Friendly Games, is based on the tale of one boy's efforts to save the spirit of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games and Boo Loves Books is based on a true story of school children reading to rescue cats. Her picture book Message in a Sock was Shortlisted for the NSW Premier's History Awards (2019) and Shortlisted for the Western Australian Young Readers Book Awards (2019).

Stef Gemmill writes beautiful stories of hope and peril that bring children's imaginations to life. Her recent picture book, In My Dreams, is a lyrical bedtime story for children with big dreams and active minds, while A Home for Luna gently and touches on homelessness and change. Stef started her writing career as a music journalist before turning her hand towards children's books.

Renée Treml is the author and illustrator of several successful picture books for very young readers, including: Roo Knows BlueTen Little Owls and Wombat Big, Puggle Small. She is also the creator of the junior fiction graphic novels Sherlock Bones and the Natural History Mystery and Sherlock Bones and the Sea-Creature Feature. Renée’s books have won or been listed for awards including the CBCA Crichton Award for New Illustrator, Speech Pathology Book of the Year, Davitt Awards for Children’s Crime Novel, Aurealis Awards for Best Graphic Novel/Illustrated Work, the Readings Kid's Prize and the Environment Award for Children’s Literature.
