CYA Writers and Illustrators Conference 2024


Stef Gemmill is an international award-winning children’s picture book and middle-grade fiction author. Her debut picture book, A Home for Luna won the 2020 Rubery Book Award (Children). Leaning on her background as a Montessori teacher, music journalist and technical writer she writes about complex concepts and issues in a unique style that places the reader in the shoes of the main character.

Currently a Writer in Residence for the Ardoch Education Charity, she loves to share her passion for writing by creating picture books with children in underprivileged schools. She lives on Waddawarrung Country on the Surf Coast of Victoria where she is surrounded by nature and story inspiration.

Join Surf Coast award-winning authors Kaye Baillie and Stef Gemmill alongside award-winning illustrator Luisa Gioffre-Suzuki to learn about how they got into the children's book industry - and the different paths you can take to achieve your goals.

If you're an emerging author or illustrator and dream of being picked up by a trade publisher this discussion is for you. The panellists will share industry secrets including the art of pitching your stories or portfolio, what publishers are looking for and how to get your work in front of them and the pros and cons of having an agent.

Graphic Novel Workshop with author Stef Gemmill Stef Gemmill is an international award-winning author of children's books on issues that matter. Her debut picture book A Home for Luna, a story of homelessness and change, won the International Rubery Book Award in 2020. Stef is currently working on an environmental middle-grade novel about a girl who has a riding accident, and her struggle to get her colt back after it runs off with wild brumbies while learning to ride again with mono vision.

In this two-part workshop, Stef will work with students on a graphic novel idea to capture the key elements of an exciting story. As a group, they will workshop a story seed using visual images, crafting a short graphic novel.

Torquay Library - Meet the Picture Book Creators & Story Time

Meet Local Picture Book Creators Stef Gemmill, Kay Baillie, Renee Treml at Torquay Library Story Time

Join us for a special event with 3 local children's book authors, Kaye Baillie, Stef Gemmill and Renee Treml.

Three local children's book creators will share their stories to take young readers from a mama roo's pouch to a bathtub full of outback animals, and then ride a dragon in their dreams. Join Kaye Baillie, Stef Gemmill and Renee Treml for stories, take-home activities and more.

Bookings essential as places are strictly limited. 

  • All family members over 12 months of age require a separate booking, including adults.

  • Please follow the current government directives regarding face coverings.

  • Families are asked to follow library staff directions, practice physical distancing, and cancel their booking if anyone in their group is unwell on the day of the program.

Bookings close one day prior to the session. If you require assistance to make a booking, please contact library staff.

This panel discussion is part of the 2020 #NotTheSurfCoastArtsTrail PORTAL, an online festival and gathering space featuring Surf Coast creatives of all disciplines.

The Panelists

Kaye Baillie is an award-winning author of picture books for children and finds inspiration from true stories and events. Her newest book, The Friendly Games, is based on the tale of one boy's efforts to save the spirit of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games and Boo Loves Books is based on a true story of school children reading to rescue cats. Her picture book Message in a Sock was Shortlisted for the NSW Premier's History Awards (2019) and Shortlisted for the Western Australian Young Readers Book Awards (2019).

Stef Gemmill writes beautiful stories of hope and peril that bring children's imaginations to life. Her recent picture book, In My Dreams, is a lyrical bedtime story for children with big dreams and active minds, while A Home for Luna gently and touches on homelessness and change. Stef started her writing career as a music journalist before turning her hand towards children's books.

Renée Treml is the author and illustrator of several successful picture books for very young readers, including: Roo Knows BlueTen Little Owls and Wombat Big, Puggle Small. She is also the creator of the junior fiction graphic novels Sherlock Bones and the Natural History Mystery and Sherlock Bones and the Sea-Creature Feature. Renée’s books have won or been listed for awards including the CBCA Crichton Award for New Illustrator, Speech Pathology Book of the Year, Davitt Awards for Children’s Crime Novel, Aurealis Awards for Best Graphic Novel/Illustrated Work, the Readings Kid's Prize and the Environment Award for Children’s Literature.
